Questions to Ask … 

If you are considering whether you or your parent might need to start planning for in-home assistance or if it is time to relocate into a Assisted Living Community.

  1. Is your parent telling you that she/he is eating, but you’re seeing food go bad in the refrigerator?

  2. Has your parent been a victim of elder abuse because she/he trusts strangers? 

  3. Have you noticed that your parent is wearing the same clothes on each of your visits?

  4. Is your parent covering up bruises from falling that she/he doesn’t want you to see?

  5. Have you noticed a lack of personal hygiene, such as poor oral habits, bathes, shaving or hair care?

  6. Are they having difficulty getting in and out of the bathtub or on and off the toilet?

  7. When you look around the house and yard, is it as clean and neat as it was in the past?

  8. Are they losing an interest in activities they use to enjoy, such as church?

  9. Does she/he spend most of their day in a few rooms in the house?

  10. Is your parent getting lost on the way home from routine trips or wandering away from home?

  11. Does your parent respond appropriately to an emergency?

  12. Is your parent able to take medications correctly?

  13. Does your parent hear strange noises at night or becoming increasingly paranoid or fearful of others?

  14. Is your parent becoming more dependent on family members?

  15. Has your parent lost touch with friends and isolating themselves?

  16. Is your parent misplacing things or leaving the stove on?

  17. Forgetting to do things they once did like paying bills or balancing the checkbook?

  18. Does your parent repeat questions or statements, or makes multiple phone calls with the same questions?

  19. Unsafe driving?

  20. When you really look at your parent, do you see the bright and vibrant person from years ago or do you see a more limited person who needs some help one hour, three hours or around the clock help?

If you answered yes to even a couple of these questions your parent might be ready for assisted living of in-home care.
